Preparing Your Awnings For Winter Time

Check Retractable Awning for Damage

Check your awning for signs of damage, such as worn areas or tears. Check the stitching to make sure it has not starting to unravel. If your retractable awning has a valance, make sure it hasn’t started to wear out from exposure to wind.

Clean and Dry

You should dust off your awning to remove dirt, leaves, pollen, or other debris that accrued on it during the summer and fall.

Next is to wash your retractable awning with a soft cloth and soapy water. Avoid harsh cleaners and abrasive scrubbers, they can cause damage to the fabric. Dry the retractable awning as much as possible to avoid mold and mildew from forming.

Other Steps to Prepare Awning for Winter

Take off removable parts, such as a valance. If you remove the valance, it may need to be washed. After you have washed the valance, dry it completely, roll it up, and store it in a dry place.

Next retract the awning. Make sure there is no fabric that is loose or hanging out of the housing. If you see any hanging fabric, tuck it inside so it will be protected.

If you have a winter cover put it over the awning. This will protect it from winter weather as well as insects.
